Grit Classes started with a fairly ordinary observation: students in overcrowded batches don't get noticed until they're already behind. We built a small-batch physics coaching institute in Kolkata around the opposite idea, teach fewer students, but teach them properly, so that a student's confusion gets caught in the first week it appears rather than three chapters later.

The Origin of GRIT

After years spent teaching physics at some of the larger coaching institutes in the city, Amit Kumar noticed the same pattern repeating itself. As batch sizes grew into the hundreds, genuinely knowing each student, where they were stuck, what they'd misunderstood, what they needed repeated, became close to impossible. A teacher can lecture to three hundred students, but they can't actually teach three hundred students at once, and the difference between those two things matters more than most brochures admit.

The students at the top of the batch got noticed. The ones in the middle, often just as capable, quietly fell further behind each month, and by the time anyone realised, the gap had become hard to close. Rote learning filled the space that real problem-solving should have occupied, because it was simply faster to teach a memorised method to three hundred people than to build genuine understanding in each of them.

Grit Classes was built to work the other way around. Batch sizes stay small enough that doubts get resolved face-to-face rather than in a queue, and students are trained to actually work through multi-step problems themselves rather than watch someone else solve them on a board. It's a slower way to run a coaching institute in some respects, and a deliberately more effective one in the ways that actually matter to a student sitting an exam.

Our Mission

To build strong conceptual foundations in physics, develop genuine problem-solving ability rather than exam tricks, and prepare students for both school examinations and national-level competitive exams including JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, Olympiads, NTSE, and various scholarship exams. Marks matter, but they should be the natural result of understanding, not a separate skill practised in isolation from it.

Concept Before Formula

Every topic gets explained through reasoning and real examples before a single numerical is attempted. A formula introduced without the "why" behind it tends to be forgotten right when a student needs it most, usually in the middle of an exam when there's no time left to reconstruct it from scratch.

Honest Feedback

Test results get discussed plainly, not softened. Parents and students hear specifically where a concept broke down, so the next few weeks can actually be spent fixing that, rather than guessing at it or repeating a general instruction to "practise more."

Amit Kumar is widely regarded as one of Kolkata's most dedicated physics educators. With over 15 years of experience in competitive exam preparation, he has developed a genuinely intuitive sense of how examiners frame questions, and, more usefully, exactly where students tend to lose marks under exam pressure, often not because they didn't know the concept, but because the question tested it from an unfamiliar angle.

That's the standard we hold every lesson to at Grit Classes, whether the goal is a school report card or a rank in JEE Advanced.

We work with students from Class 7 through Class 12, and the teaching genuinely changes at each stage rather than following one fixed template stretched across six years. Early on, the focus is curiosity and getting comfortable with the idea that physics is something you can reason through, not something you memorise. By Class 11 and 12, the same habit of reasoning gets applied to genuinely difficult, multi-concept problems, the kind that show up in JEE Advanced and NEET rather than a standard school test.

What actually sets this apart from a typical coaching institute isn't a slogan, it's the practical result of keeping batches small. A teacher who has thirty students instead of three hundred can afford to notice when someone's stuck, ask them to explain their reasoning out loud, and correct exactly where it broke down. That kind of attention is genuinely difficult to fake at scale, so we've simply chosen not to try.

In practice, this means regular worksheets and topic-wise assignments, chapter tests with real performance analysis rather than just a score, personalised doubt-clearing sessions, individual academic guidance, and revision classes and mock exams timed around each stage's actual exam calendar. Progress gets tracked continuously, not just checked at the end of a term when it's too late to adjust course.

None of this is about pretending physics is effortless. It genuinely isn't, particularly by Class 11 and 12, when the subject becomes mathematical and unforgiving in ways school science never quite prepares a student for. What we can control is whether a student faces that difficulty with a real understanding underneath them or with a stack of half-memorised formulas that fall apart the moment a question is phrased differently.

It's worth explaining what "conceptual clarity" actually looks like in a classroom, since the phrase gets used loosely enough elsewhere that it's started to mean very little. In practice, it means a student can take a physics law they've learned and apply it to a situation they've never explicitly practised, because they understand the underlying idea rather than a specific worked example tied to it. That skill, more than any single formula, is what separates students who do well on a familiar test and struggle on an unfamiliar one from students who can handle both.

The academic journey we build for a student looks different depending on where they're starting from. In Class 7 and 8, the priority is curiosity and comfort, making sure physics feels like an interesting subject to think about rather than a list of definitions to memorise before a test. By Class 9 and 10, that curiosity gets channelled into more structured analytical thinking, still school-focused, but increasingly aware of where the concepts are heading in Class 11 and 12. And in the final two years, the same foundation gets stress-tested against genuinely difficult, multi-concept problems, the kind that show up in JEE Advanced and NEET rather than a standard school paper.

We're also honest about what we can't do. No coaching institute can guarantee a specific rank, and any institute that claims otherwise is usually selling something other than an honest education. What we can guarantee is that a student's time in our classroom will be spent building genuine understanding, that their weak areas will be identified specifically rather than vaguely, and that they'll get individual attention proportional to what they actually need, not a fixed amount handed out equally regardless of where each student stands.

Parents often ask what a typical week looks like for a student enrolled with us. It usually includes a mix of concept-based classroom teaching, worksheets tied directly to what was just covered, a chapter test roughly every few weeks with a real breakdown of where marks were lost, and a standing invitation to bring any unresolved doubt to a dedicated session rather than let it sit until the next chapter makes it worse. None of this is unusual on its own. What tends to be unusual is doing all of it consistently, for every student, rather than for the few who happen to ask the most questions.

The programs themselves are organised in stages that roughly track how a student's relationship with physics changes over six years. The Foundation Program for Class 7 and 8 is about building curiosity and comfort with the subject, getting a student to the point where a new concept feels interesting rather than intimidating. Foundation Phase 1, for Class 9, starts strengthening analytical skills specifically, since this is where physics genuinely starts requiring structured thinking rather than observation. Foundation Phase 2, for Class 10, balances board exam excellence with an early, deliberate head start on the kind of thinking JEE and NEET will eventually demand.

Advanced Phase 1, for Class 11, is where competitive exam preparation becomes the explicit focus, alongside the school syllabus rather than instead of it, covering JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, and other national-level exams in real depth. Advanced Phase 2, for Class 12, brings all of that together, refining concepts, building calculation speed and accuracy, and adding the exam strategy and time management that actually decides performance on the day of a real test, not just in a practice session with no clock running.

Learning is not just about scoring marks, though marks understandably matter to every family walking through our door. It's about a student leaving Grit Classes with the confidence to look at an unfamiliar problem and actually attempt it, rather than freeze because it doesn't match anything they've memorised. That kind of confidence tends to outlast any single exam, which is really the point of building it properly in the first place.
